Alif Lam Mim. Ayat pertama surah Al-Baqarah ini terdiri dari huruf-huruf lepas. Sebagaimana pada surah-surah Makkiyah banyak yang dibuka dengan huruf-huruf lepas seperti Alif Lam Ra, Alif Lam Mim Ra, ha Mim, ta Ha, Kaf Ha Ya 'Ain sad, dan lain-lain. Surah-surah yang dimulai dengan huruf-huruf singkatan (muqattha'ah) semuanya berjumlah 29 surah.

Alif Lam Mim terdiri dari huruf-huruf lepas, di mana sebenarnya Alif Lam Mim hanyalah satu dari sekian banyak huruf lepas yang menjadi ayat pembuka dalam beberapa surat di Al Quran. Sebut saja surat Maryam dengan Kaf Ha Ya 'Ain sad, An Naml dengan ta Sin, Yasin dengan Ya Sin, As Syura dengan ha Mim, dan sebagainya.
